Wow thats fantastic that they are selling so much, however I wonder if this move is a good idea, then again I am up for it. ArenaNet knows what they are doing and if they wanna do this to ensure we don't all get screwed by lag and server fails more power to em! Gonna be interesting to see how this pans out in the long run.
Ensuring the best possible play experience for our fans is our highest priority. We’ve said before that we would be willing to temporarily disable first-party digital sales if we felt our high player concurrency may compromise player experiences. We have now reached that point.
Effective immediately we have disabled sales via buy.guildwars2.com. To be clear, box and digital sales are still available via our retail partners. We are tracking our concurrency closely while expanding our infrastructure. We’ll re-enable first-party digital sales as soon as we feel that we can do so safely. ~RB2
In my opinion that is great news that they are selling so much that they are having these issues because of the fact WoW had to freeze sales as well back when it first launched. That game blew up just as much as this game currently is and will be for the next years to come. Plus since this game is a B2P game, we dont need to worry about wasting money while they fix these issues. So imo its a good move, shows character, shows super good sales, and also shows that they arnt scared features down to make sure they arnt getting exploited, or crashing the servers even more.
They sold over 1 million before actual launch. Source: examiner.com/article/guild-wars-2-sells-over-one-million-copies-before-its-release
