AggroChat #108 - Because Morality

Ashgar, Belghast, Kodra, Tam and a super rambly show filled with lots of topics

This week we are down to a much smaller core for the AggroChat podcast with Thalen off exploring Japan and making us all jealous, and Grace needing to deal with some family stuff. The irony is there was a time when three members of the podcast was the norm but it is funny how much smaller the group feels when we are down a few now. For years I wondered if we would ever get used to recording with as big of a group as we often do... and I guess the answer to that is a resounding yes. As far as the show... this is yet another one of those "do we have anything to talk about?" episodes that ends up developing a life of its own.
Topics Discussed

  • Tanking in WoW and FFXIV
  • Mark of the Ninja

AggroChat #106 - Mostly Overwatch and Demons

Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tam and Thalen discuss a wide range of topics… but mostly Overwatch and Diablo 3 Season 6

This evening Ash, Bel, Grace, Kodra, Tam and Thalen talked about a whole bunch of topics... but the largest amount of that time was devoted to Overwatch. Over the last week a bunch of us have played the game and we had commentary on it. Mostly several of us enjoy the game that is... but mourn the game that could have been with Titan. We also talk about looter shooters in general and the problems The Division has been having with both rampant cheating, and bad loot design. We spend quite a bit of time talking about Diablo 3 Season 6 and the rush that Grace and Belghast have been participating in. Tam spent some time playing Always Sometimes Monsters, which lead into a conversation about the Steam Suggestion Queue. Kodra has been playing Elite Dangerous again, which brings up a discussion of Eve Online. Thalen has recently started the Stick of Truth, and we get into a discussion about the arrival of Ryzom on Steam. This spawns a lengthy conversation about dead MMOs and the sequence in which we played various games. Somewhere in there we also had a bit of a conversation about the Marvel Comics Universe. This is one of the most rambling episodes we have recorded... but also the most true to our real life conversations.

AGGROCHAT #105 – THE GONE HOME SHOW

Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tam and Thalen talk about the April 2016 Game of the Month Game – Gone Home

This week we discuss the April 2016 AggroChat Game of the Month title… Gone Home. This was a pick by Grace, and honestly one that probably a handful of us would have never played. However it also holds the special designation as being one of the few Game Club titles that we all universally liked. We talk about the design of the game, and the narrative, as well as the context. This game is the quintessential 90s game. It is set in 1994, the year Belghast graduated from High School and with Grace and Thalen not being far behind that also. For us it was this trip down memory lane that added so much to the experience. In any case, as is always the case if you have not played Gone Home and intend to… spoilers are plentiful.

Couch Podtatoes Ep 85: Hot Podtatoe Headlines

Welcome back to weekly shows! As I mentioned the other day on Twitter, we are going back to a weekly schedule after a couple of months of biweekly shows.

"So, it's been a couple of months that @couchpodtatoes has been operating on a bi-weekly schedule. This was due in part to busy schedules. It's also hard coming up with something fresh to discuss every week. I know I was feeling a bit of fatigue when it came to being creative. We had an answer... we went biweekly and took on another co-host. But now we're feeling re-energized. I personally was missing doing it every week. I love talking with my co-hosts. We also had some positive feedback recently and want to keep things going strong for our fans. So I'm happy to announce that Couch Podtatoes is going back to a weekly schedule. We'll have something new for you this weekend, so keep an eye out for that. Our biweekly shows will remain the same with our other hosts. Thanks for dealing with our shit while we figured things out! And sorry for the spam!"

With that said, this is our first news/current events show, and we talk about everything and the kitchen sink. We also brought "Idiots on the Internet" back from the dead, and talk about a particularly infamous League of Legends streamer who was recently banned by Riot. Otherwise, it's our usual rants and rambles. Let us know what you guys think about the new format ideas!

Couch Podtatoes Ep 84: Cynicism

Welcome back to another episode of the show. We're back with Tacktix for an in-depth discussion about Cynicism and how it can relate to gaming. We tackle how some of us feel that we have become more cynical with age, how skepticism, apathy and other factors can affect our moods towards gaming itself, the industry and our communities. We round it out with how cynicism and trust are related. Of course, we also talk a bit about what we've been playing lately too. Check it out, and let us know what you think!

AggroChat #104 - Star Wars and Design

Tonight Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tam and Thalen talk about the best Star Wars stories and also Level Design constructs

Tonight we had a bit of a strange show, that traversed a wide number of topics. First Ashgar talks about a game that he and Belghast played at Pax South called Stories: The Path of Destinies and how it is a good game in spite of largely being overlooked because of the horrible title. Belghast goes into a discussion of the “Sherpa” culture in Destiny and how it shapes player's actions in random groups. Kodra talks about Eterna the logical successor to Folding, which strives to solve the medical problem of properly sequencing RNA… and at the same time being a good puzzle game. We get into a length discussion about level design constructs and what makes a universally good design. Finally we delve into the topic mentioned last week, as we try and decide if there are more good Star Wars games than bad ones. We also get into a discussion about what the best Star Wars story was.

Topics Discussed:

  • Stories: Path of Destinies
  • Sherpa Culture in Destny
  • Eterna
  • Level Design Constructs
  • Good Star Wars Games
  • Best Star Wars Story

AggroChat #103 - Reboot Done Right

Tonight Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tam and Thalen celebrate two years of AggroChat and discuss more games!

This past week marked the second anniversary of the AggroChat podcast. For two years we have been coming together every week to discuss whatever we happened to be playing. So this is a great time to thank you our listeners for putting up with our rambling. We still very much feel like we don’t know what we are doing, but keep doing it anyway. This week we discuss the Overwatch Beta weekend that finally some of us managed to get into. Belghast contrasts his experiences in Overwatch with the Doom multiplayer weekend as well. Grace talks about the Wildstar Faction changes and how they are essentially the worst of both worlds. Ash and Bel talk about the Ratchet and Clank reboot, and how this is the way that all reboots should work. Kodra has continued to dig further into the world of Dark Souls and has some thoughts about it as it relates to learning Raid Boss encounters. We all get sidetracked on a discussion about good movie ports, and how we probably need to have an entire show about good Star Wars video games versus bad ones. Finally we wrap things up more or less with a lengthy discussion about how important it is to like the way your character looks in a game.

Show Topics

  • Overwatch Beta Weekend
  • Doom Multiplayer
  • Wildstar Cross Faction Letdown
  • Ratchet and Clank Reboot
  • Good Movie Ports
  • Dark Souls
  • Importance of Looking Good in Games

Couch Podtatoes Ep 66: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

This week's show marks the last Digital Frontier of the year, as Doone informed us that along with being super busy with real life stuff and his expanded family, he knew that he'll be even more busy with the holidays coming. We'll probably be busier too, so don't be surprised if we take a week or two off when the holidays arrive.

The topic at hand for this show was the good, the bad and the ugly surrounding the gaming community, but as is usual during a Digital Frontier segment, we talk about all sorts of media and social constructs. Overall I'd say we agree that the gaming community could be better, but that it's not as bad as it could be either. There's still hope for improvement. We were a little more free form this time around, and did the whole show without notes, so hopefully it still sounds up to par with our usual efforts. Also, don't mind the static sounds coming from the background occasionally, apparently the storm of the century was going on at Eri's house while we were recording so you can pick that up a certain points in the show. With that said, we hope you enjoy, and as always feel free to leave commentary where appropriate.

Couch Podtatoes Ep 63: All About The Narrative

Early release this week because we got things recorded on time and I had little going on today so the editing was a breeze.

I finally managed to get Doone on the show after a little over a month, and though we had been trying for the past couple of weeks, his succubi children have drained him of all life. We have however found the solution! From now on we'll be playing some games together beforehand so that he'll stay awake to record. Seemed to work well this time anyhow.

So with Doone on the show that means it's time for Doone's Digital Frontier again, and of course that means having a more philosophical discussion about games, and this time we're tackling the Narrative. Not only the narrative of individual games and the stereotypical definition of narrative itself, but also the narrative of our steam libraries and what stories these lists tell about our personalities. Still with me? It will all make sense once you listen. Enjoy!
