Get To Know The Community - Weekend!

Attention, Whitestarians!

This weekend it’s „Get To Know The Community“ weekend! (short: GTKTCW .. wow, that’s not easy on the tongue)

As you know, we’re a multi gaming guild. Meaning: we’re playing multiple MMOs at the same time and maybe not all of us do know all the other members in Whitestar. So THIS is the opportunity to share two minutes of your precious time, to get in touch with someone you mayhaps haven’t met before or not talked to every day and make this person happy.

This weekend’s mission:

  • There will be a guild member assigned to you by random (see list below)
  • You PM (via Anook or Discord) him/her 1.) one of your favorite screenies of your current main MMO/game and 2.) a short text message what you love most in your game / why you would always recommend this game to others!
  • IF you know the person you got assigned to you are also free to type one sentence what you like about him/her, totally optional ofc.

(you don't need to make up a whole graphic! You can send the Screenie in the Anook PM/Discord PM and write a little text there)

Of course you are not forced to do this, but it would show great interest and your social abilities to help the Whitestarians grow closer to each other in our community by only spending 2 minutes of your time :)

Thank you in advance!

Discord - Our official stance

As you may have noticed lately, we had a great debate regarding the use of Discord and TeamSpeak lately and plenty of misunderstandings. This post is a clarification aswell as our official stance regarding this after several weeks of test.

When @Agagor created the Discord server, it was simply meant to be a test, an exploration, a discovery. Like "Hey guys, I've created a Facebook page! Come test it" It was not meant to replace Teamspeak. The thing is that Discord is an excellent tool, ideal for our community, and many of us, including myself, have immediately shown a great enthousiasm about it. We have asked all our members to join the server and test it because "one day it might replace TeamSpeak". This had been misunderstood and some of our members may have taken in the wrong way, like we were imposing something without a discussion...

Why Discord is so good
Discord is an excellent tool for a multigaming like ours, far superior to TeamSpeak, and this are the reasons why we love it:

  • Clean text chat, with possibilities of using emotes, editing text, sharing files, Youtube embeded.
  • High Quality Voice chat, with good sound, easy way to mute yourself or cut the sound
  • Possibility to be part of several servers and be able to easily switch to one to the others while keeping track of all chat
  • Great interface allowing you to be in one voicechat and still be able to text chat with any chat you are part of without leaving your current voicechat
  • No need to instal Discord on your computer, it works on a Browser. Mobile and Desktop client with more functionalities like Push to Talk.
  • Any of our member can sent a URL invitation to anyone outside the guild via the Lobby. Possibility to create temporary channel (for specific event and what not)
  • TwichTv linked to Discord. Plans to link Youtube and Battlenet aswell

Back in the days, we were all using MSN, and one day MSN became outdated. Discord is certainly the future social media for all gamers!

A ideal tool for Whitestar
To take care of a project such as Whitestar, we always try to choose the tools that would serve us the best. For this reason we choose Anook over Enjin or Gamelaunch. It proved to be a great choice, we met several new members via Anook.
Discord is perfect to increase the relationships and bonding between our members, the socialisation outside games. While this doesn't matter for some of our members, for some others, it's crucial part of being part of a community. Some poeple prefer for various reasons a text chat over a voicechat.
Some poeple are working a lot and have little time to be actually in game. This allow them to keep in touch while they are not gaming (and to not be too bored at work).
Some members aren't currently playing any of the games we do play and have the possibility to still be part of the family by chatting with everyone else every time they want.
Discord is a giant guildchat accross all games and that's excactly what we have attempted to do with Teamspeak without success.

In our community, we have always favourised democracy. After some testing, we intended to organise a discussion, a serious poll on a private forum post, something to let you choose. But let's face reality.
There is no going back. By encouraging our members to test Discord, we have opened a door that can not be closed anymore. We would decide to continue to use Teamspeak, and would delete the Whitestar Discord server, our members would still continue to use Discord privately or with other friends, other communities. This would be a very harmfull situation, by having the community shattered in various communities rather than concentrated in one place as we always have intended.
Since the Discord server had been created, only the ESO-core* still uses Teamspeak. Everyone else is on Discord daily. That's a handfull of players versus a large majority of the community. We do not need poll or more discussion to understand what's a massive success.
In addition, the Council is totally convinced that Discord is the right tool for our community. The voicechat that will help us to build our project, improve it, and make our life more pleasant.
In short, we are officialy declaring Discord as our Primary Voice chat, and we encourage ALL our members to join up! We know that its not excactly democratic and that will upset some of our members, but we truely believe its the best solution.

* I call ESO-core the dozen of players playing ESO on daily basis. They do not represent the entierety of the guild however

In practise...
Does that mean that the Teamspeak server will be taken down? That's Agagor decision, as he is the one generously providing and paying the TS server. He declared that there will be some changes that will be explained soon, but for now the server are still be up and can be used at your own discretion.
Our official community and guild events will be organised on Discord, and we will encourage you to use Discord in between. But we are not enforcing you. If you don't want to join, it's your choice. You still can use TS. By using Discord we don't force you to be social 24/7, just like TeamSpeak you can just close it down when you want some time alone without anyone to bother you in chat or voice. You can mute yourself (mic and/or speakers/headphones) and even mute the text chat channels you don't want any part of.

How to use Discord

  • Discord should be very easy for everyone. You simply follow the link and you will be placed in the Lobby from where any of our members can drag you in a different Voicechat.
  • Our sever is secured though. So you will need permission to access our different textchat. Once you have confirmed your account via e-mail Agagor or any of the Council aka @Elloa @Savian @LunaDra @torhagen (Amu on Discord) @Neny @Nyah and @Nehr can give you the correct rank. You can use Discord in a browser without installing the application. We still recommand to install the desktop application to have access to various functionality such as push-to-talk. You can also install the mobile application on your phone/tablet though some older mobile are outdated for it.
  • Once you are set up on Discord, you can join any Discord server of your choosing or even create your own.

How we lead our Guilds

Each of our Whitestar guilds are independent, lead by a different leader with a different personality, and are shaped by different members. It's not a surprise that our three guilds are a bit different and do not have exactly the same atmosphere or purpose.
However, and this the very reason of the existence of the Council, our guilds share a common structure , goal, and direction. As a reminder...

Whitestar is a community before being a guild
This means that as Guild Leaders, we will lead our guilds keeping the community in mind as our primary goal. We pay attention beyond the happiness of our guild members and our activities in the game itself. We ensure that any of our members can jump from one game to another and still feel at home. We encourage cross game friendship and try to build bridges to create bonds between our members no matter the guild they belong to. And sometimes this leads us to take decisions while thinking about the Community benefit before one guild benefit. For example: the Discord-TS debate is considered from a Community perspective rather than a guild perspective because it's a tool that will influence and help us with our primary goal.
This mean that as members you will be constantly encouraged to bond with other members even if you do not play the same game. But nothing will be forced on you. Be assured that you will not be frowned upon if you simply want to share your time with your guildmates. We respect your freedom of choice. But expect to be poked regularly and encouraged to participate in our community activities.

Whitestar is not elitist, Whitestar is not slacking
Whitestar gathers many types of players. Some are very skilled, very knowledgeable in their game, and could be a brilliant member in a hardcore guild. Some of our members are clumsy, or shy, or less skilled. And some of our members are simply playing a game to have fun and refuse to bother with optimization and high performance.
We lead our guilds in a way to ensure everyone will feel comfortable, feel worthy and at home. We want to help our members to explore themselves and push their limit at their own pace rather than imposing upon them a playstyle that would not fit them.
However, we also want explore the content of the game we play and challenge ourselves. For this reason we do organise different types of activities. Some are relaxed and do not require particular skills and are meant to socialize and have fun. Some others require certain skill levels and preparation and allow the guild to progress and overcome challenges. Those activities will be clearly presented with the requirement and expectations so there will be no confusion in what our members are signing up for.
This means as members you are welcome in Whitestar, no matter how skilled you are in the game you play. It also means that you are asked to be respectful, patient, and tolerant towards other members. Do not enforce your own vision of how the game should be played but offer your help if asked. In the meantime understand that some of our activities might not be meant for you.

Whitestar guilds are social before anything else
This means that we always think about the wellbeing of our members, the friendship, and the socialization rather than some ingame achievement such as raiding progression or PVP success.
This influences the way we recruit our members (personality over skills), organise our ranking, banking systems, and activities.
We will never sacrifice socialization for better progression. This also means that our guilds will be less efficient than pure progressing or PVP guilds and that our task as guild leaders will be more complicated. This is something we have to acknowledge and accept.
This also means that we will pay a lot of attention to how our members behave toward each others. We may be very forgiving towards certain behaviors but extremely firm on anything that relates to relationships. We will not tolerate exclusion, badmouthing, mockery or lack of respect and patience towards other members.

Joy - Love -Truth
This is our Triforce. Our values. How we intent to lead our guilds. How we expect our members to behave. No matter the games we play or do not play.
