It will be interesting to see how this plays out, if it turns out to be true....

Was just about to post this! I'm not sure I like the idea. This is what PC gaming is for.. upgrade when you want ect and only have to buy the parts you need. If they go down this road, we can expect a new console every 3 years (PS5, PS5.5 ect) and they are going to be similar to smartphones. Certainly don't want to be shelling out another $500 or so to get better graphics.. I'm starting to think I'll only buy PS4/console exclusives for the PS4 and will use my PC for everything else.

Yeah I can't say I'm too fond of the idea. I have no interest in 4k yet, and couldn't hold it against anyone who gets one - as I'm sure the graphics will be awesome! I'm just worried about the near future, and what it would mean for games on the vanilla ps4.. it's all very well demanding that developers ensure compatibility for both, but I don't think that's viable long term. You only need to break out the ps3 and try and play any ps3/4 games to see what I'm getting at. Games that run ok on ps4 can be terrible on ps3 eg shadow of mordor

I hope this is a one off mid generation upgrade as a reaction to the release of VR. If its something they make a habit of, we may as well join the Master Race.

I wish people would stop talking about 4K in regards to the new PS4.5 there is NO WAY simply doubling (and a little bit) the GPU power will be enough for 4K some games struggle to run at 1080P, if we are lucky we may see some very simple games running at 4K that aren't very GPU intensive but that will be it...

I'm interested to see where this goes though, look at FallOut4 it only JUST runs on the PS4, with stutters and the like making things annoying at times, on the 4.5 it should be able to run quite nicely as is.

Of course people are going to talk about 4k though Paps, after all, that's the point of the upgrade ;) From what I understand about it all, it does sound like a bit of a stretch that this proposed upgrade would enable all games to run at 4k. It's probably more to do with vr than anything else. I'd be pissed if I'd preordered the headset, then later on I found out there's a compulsory new system involved in it. I guess we'll find out in a couple of months.

the fact is barely ANY games will be able to run at 4K, thought it does seem to be to improve the VR experience, though they would be shooting themselves in the foot if it was mandatory for VR, so I really don't see it happening...

Just out of curiosity, why are you so sure not many games will run in 4k? I don't think they're too worried about shooting their own feet at this point, so a must have upgrade to run vr doesn't seem too far fetched.

Because having spent as much time as I have on PC with flagship GFX cards, that still aren't enough to run 4K but are orders of magnitude more powerful than the PS4, it's a pretty safe estimate.

As for shooting themselves in the foot, they can't afford to spring it on people who will already have their VR headsets after the fact, so it has to work on existing hardware, but that doesn't mean it has to work all that well on existing hardware ;)

If anyone, you should realise that a pc and console aren't comparable in terms of hardware specs vs performance.. They can afford to make vr adopters upgrade. I believe they don't really care, and I'll stand by it. That's the reason why they're silent over cross platform support (with xbox). Also, why we still get the same shit indy games each month with the + subscription. Sony has won this generation of the console wars, and they know there's a good percentage of the userbase who will just buy whatever they're told.

I know they are not comparable, so if for example, the new PS4 was going to be in the general vicinity of current high end GFX then 4K away, it might not be enough for a PC to manage 4K but on a console it should cover it.

But no matter how much they have won by, they might be able to afford skimping on freebies, and charging more for things, but they won't convince people who already have their VR headset in hand that they need a new PS4 for it to work, it might work poorly on the normal PS4 but it will still work.
